Beginners - What is yoga?

The word yoga – ‘yuj’ – is Sanskrit for ‘yoke’ or ‘union.’

Yoga uses physical, mental and spiritual exercises, many of which have roots in ancient traditions, to bring into union the mind, body, breath and spirit.

Traditionally the ultimate aim is detachment from the demands of ego and unification with all beings. Perhaps even the realization of Samadhi … the big E … Enlightenment itself – in which there is no division between individual consciousness and the universe and existence is pure and boundless bliss.

While this blissful state may feel like a way off, you can be sure of one thing – whether you first get into yoga for a beach body, to destress, prep for a baby, unite with all beings, or just with puppies, a regular yoga practice will help you live in the present with a clear mind, a healthy body and a happy spirit.
